Submarine is a soundtrack created by Arctic Monkeys frontman Alex Turner for the 2011 film of the same name. Stepping aside from his usual distorted guitars and abrasive indie rock origins, Turner created a minimally-produced, atmospheric indie folk EP for director Richard Ayoade’s debut film.

If I were to go back through all of my years of listening to music, this album would be at the very top of my “most listened to” list. With only 6 tracks, that doesn’t sound impressive, but I know these songs like the back of my hand by now. Combining Alex Turner’s genius musicianship with a milder, more melancholic sound, it was only a matter of time before I found Submarine. Much like the content of the film itself, the songs chronicle the initial stages of young love in a confusing and cruel world where it isn’t always going to work out as planned. I have cried countless times to Glass in the Park, Stuck on the Puzzle, and Hiding Tonight, maybe more than I care to admit.
Usually, people listen to the soundtrack after watching the film. With Submarine, many people, including myself, decided to watch the film after listening to the soundtrack. It has guided me through just about every high and low that I have experienced in my mid-teens to adult life (which is a lot).
