Helplessness Blues – Fleet Foxes

Tags: ,

Released by indie folk kings Fleet Foxes in 2011, Helplessness Blues is a staple in any music lover’s record cabinet, and if it isn’t in yours, it absolutely should be. With ebbing and flowing moments of quiet reflection, to intense, orchestral crescendos, Helplessness Blues is certainly one of Fleet Foxes’ greatest creations.

How I Found This Album

I was initially introduced to Fleet Foxes through hearing their song Winter White Hymnal, as most Fleet Foxes fans are. I was so taken by their music, since it sounds so different from anything else I had ever listened to. There’s an element to their sound that almost sounds as if their songs were made to be film scores for an epic historical movie, but not the Christopher Nolan kind with explosions and sweaty Roman soldiers. Compositions like The Shrine / An Argument and Montezuma create a sense of nostalgia for a time thousands of years before my time, yet feels modern enough to listen to on a road trip.

Helplessness Blues cemented Fleet Foxes as one of my favorite bands of all time, and put them high on my list of concerts I need to see before I die. I even saved the poster from the record sleeve to hang on my wall, because even the art direction from this album is beautiful.
